Abstract:
Historical wildland fire perimeters. Contains fires greater than 1000 acres between 1950 and 1987, inclusive, and fires greater than 100 acres between 1988 and 2006, inclusive. Also contains 10 meter buffers around reported start locations of fires for which no perimeter has been located.
Purpose:
Graphical display of wildland fire history in Alaska. Some estimates of acreage burned and wildfire distribution may be made, but there are over 300 missing fires that will impact the results of such use.

Fires with perimeters not yet located are represented as 10 meter buffers around the point of origin. Work on locating additional perimeters is ongoing. Some perimeters are partial where they cross quad boundaries or the Alaska-Canada boundary, when one or more maps were not located. Some fires may be missing completely if no incident report was located.

The dataset is a personal geodatabase, or shape file (depending on which the viewer has downloaded). The BOUNDARY attribute indicates whether the record is a fire perimeter, 10-meter buffer around the point of origin (when mapped perimeter not available), or unburned polygon. The COUNTRY attribute designates the country in which the fire originated. All records are within Alaska. The YEAR attribute is the year in which the fire burned. The SITENAME attribute is the incident number assigned to the fire by the Alaska firefighting agencies. The ACRES_BURNED attribute is the calculated size of the digitized perimeter in acres. For fires that have no digitized perimeter, the reported size is used. The HECTARES_BURNED attribute is the calculated size of the digitized perimeter in hectares. For fires that have no digitized perimeter, the reported size is used. The COMMENTS attribute is used to document perimeters that were in previous fire history datasets that have been modified to reflect more accurate information.
