Historical wildland fire perimeters located in Alaska spanning the years 1942 to 2007.
<purpose>Graphical display of wildland fire history in Alaska. Some estimates of acreage burned and wildfire distribution may be made, but historical fire records exist that do not have known locations, or perimeters, which may impact the results of such use.</purpose>

<procdesc>2005 fire history dataset copied. Fire perimeters from 2006 fire season and fire perimeter updates obtained from agencies were added to fire history. One fire for 2006 is missing a perimeter and is shown with a 10 meter buffer around reported location. Current fire perimeters were collected in various ways: (1) hand drawn by field observers and screen digitized on USGS digital rasters graphics, (2) collected by GPS on the ground or helicopter, or (3) infrared imagery interpreted and transferred to USGS digital raster graphics. The perimeters were collected as shapefiles, then converted to geodatabase. Metadata imported from 2005 and modified.</procdesc>

<procdesc>Fire perimeters from 2007 fire season and previous years were exported from ESRI SDE feature class. 2007 fire season perimeters were collected in various ways: (1) hand drawn by field observers and screen digitized on USGS digital rasters graphics, (2) collected by GPS on the ground or helicopter, or (3) heads-up digitized from various satellite imagery platforms (e.g., Landsat 5, Landsat 7, MODIS). Perimeters were generally collected as shapefiles, then converted to SDE geodatabase feature classes, or heads-up digitized directly into a versioned SDE feature class using on-screen graphics such as satellite imagery. In 2007, approximately 200 previously missing perimeters were discovered and digitized using fire records and/or satellite imagery. Fire records without known perimeters that were previously indicated by 10 meter buffers in earlier releases were removed in this release. Metadata was imported from the 2007 release and modified.</procdesc>

<overview>
<eaover>This dataset is a file geodatabase, or shape file (depending on which the viewer has downloaded). The attributes found in this dataset describe various information about the fires contained within the dataset. Comments concerning processing or updating of perimeters are provided, as are fields for reported and calculated area burned, general loacation of the fires in geographic coordinates, year and date range when the fire started and was declared out, in addition to unique identifiers for each fire used in the reporting and tracking process.</eaover>
