Description:
Abstract:
Data represent geographic area in which cedar decline is occurring. Cedar decline refers to the dying or decline of yellow-cedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis) forests in Southeast Alaska and is characterized by red or yellow foliage in trees currently dying, or by white-gray snags of old mortality. Mapped snags can be standing dead as long as eighty years. The data were collected via aerial sketch mapping techniques and recorded on 1:250,000 from 500-3000 foot above ground level(AGL). Survey coverage has been most intense for forests adjacent to shorelines and waterways. Data are collected, refined and updated on an annual basis. This data represent not one year's mortality but the cumulative effect seen from the air.
Purpose:
The data set were collected as an initial attempt to quantify the acreage affected by cedar decline. The data set gives general locations of cedar decline and provides land managers and researchers a starting point when considering aspects of the resource.
Supplemental_Information:
Data is collected through aerial surveys by aerial sketching of affected areas onto USGS 1:250000 topographic series maps. Sketch work was initially digitized into an Arc/Info coverage, then later edited using ArcView. Beginning in 2001 data were sketch-digitized in real time with GeoLink Software and a GPS for signal fro positional reference. Parent files are now shapefiles.
