As part of an interagency agreement between the National Park
Service (NPS) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), basin
characteristics are being determined for a number of watersheds
in National Parks of Alaska. Many of the characteristics are
being determined by use of Geographical Information Systems
(GIS). GIS coverages are being made available to other interested
parties.
The purpose of this data set is to provide the NPS information about vegetation of the Alagnak River Basin to do basic spatial analysis. A GIS coverage of the vegetation of the Alagnak River Basin can be used to determine the type and amount of vegetation for a given watershed, to help understand the chemistry of water that drains a certain type of vegetation, or in explaining runoff characteristics for a specific stream. More knowledge and understanding of the Alagnak River Basin will help the NPS in making sound management decisions.
