As part of an interagency agreement between the National Park
Service (NPS) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), basin
characteristics are being determined for a number of watersheds
in National Parks of Alaska. Many of the characteristics are
being determined by use of Geographical Information Systems
(GIS). GIS coverages are being made available to other interested
parties.
The purpose of this data set is to provide the NPS information about the geology of the Kobuk River Basin to do basic spatial analysis. A GIS coverage of the geology of the Kobuk River Basin can be used to determine the type and amount of rock for a given watershed, to help understand the chemistry of water which drain a certain type of rock, or in explaining runoff characteristics for a specific stream. More knowledge and understanding of the Kobuk River Basin will help the NPS in making sound management decisions.

The attribute TYPE was used to distinguish the rock type, glaciers, and water. TYPE = 1 is Cenozoic volcanic rock, TYPE = 2 is Mesozoic sedimentary rock, TYPE = 3 is Mesozoic volcanic rock, TYPE = 4 is Mesozoic intrusive rock, TYPE = 5 is Paleozoic sedimentary rock, and TYPE = 6 is Precambrian rock.
