As part of an interagency agreement between the National Park
Service (NPS) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), basin
characteristics are being determined for a number of watersheds
in National Parks of Alaska. Many of the characteristics are
being determined by use of Geographical Information Systems
(GIS). GIS coverages are being made available to other interested
parties.
The purpose of this data set is to provide the NPS information about the physiographic regions of the Kobuk River Basin to do basic spatial analysis. A GIS coverage of the physiographic regions of the Kobuk River Basin can be used to determine the type of topography for a given basin. Topography of watershed can help explain the explain the runoff characteristics for a specific stream. More knowledge and understanding of the Kobuk River Basin will help the NPS in making sound management decisions.

The attribute SYMBOL was used to distinguish the type of physio- graphic region. SYMBOL = 2 are moderately high rugged mountains, SYMBOL = 7 are plateaus and highlands of rolling topography to gentle slopes, SYMBOL = 8 are low mountains, generally rolling, and SYMBOL = 9 are plains and lowlands.
