nawqa_phys is a polygon coverage of the physiographic divisions within
the Cook Inlet Basin, National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) study unit.
The coverage was created from a statewide coverage of physiographic
divisions based on USGS Professional Paper 482.
The purpose of nawqa_phys is to give a general overview of the different
physiographic divisions that exist in the Cook Inlet Basin. This coverage,
along with several other coverages of the Cook Inlet Basin, will be used to
help determine water-quality sampling locations.
Limitations_of_Data:
The coverage was developed at a 1:2,000,000 scale. Thus, caution should be
used at smaller scales.
The polygon attribute table contains the standard items with an additional item
name CODE. CODE has a value from 0 to 5. The following physiographic units are
associated with these values for CODE: 0 - Water; 1 - Extremely high rugged
mountains; 2 - Moderately high rugged mountains; 3 - Low mountains, generally
rolling; 4 - Plateaus and highlands of rolling topography and gentle slopes;
5 - Plains and lowlands.
Procedures_Used:
nawqa_phys was created from a statewide coverage of the physiographic divisions
of Alaska. The drainage basin boundaries of the Cook Inlet Basin, developed
from 1:250,000 quadrangle maps, were used as the boundaries of the coverage.
Revisions:
No revisions are planned for this dataset.
Reviews_Applied_to_Data:
The coverage was reviewed by Tim Brabets and Roy Glass by comparing a plot
of the coverage to the map contained in USGS Professional Paper 482. Roy
Glass reviewed the documentation. An editorial review of the documentation
was done by Liska Snyder.
