As part of an interagency agreement between the National Park
Service (NPS) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), basin
characteristics are being determined for a number of watersheds
in National Parks of Alaska. Many of the characteristics are
being determined by use of Geographical Information Systems
(GIS). GIS coverages are being made available to other interested
parties.
The purpose of this data set is to provide the NPS information about soils of the Lake Clark Basin to do basic spatial analysis. A GIS coverage of the soils of the Lake Clark Basin can be used to determine the type and amount of soil for a given watershed, to help understand the chemistry of water that drains a certain type of soil, or in explaining runoff characteristics for a specific stream. More knowledge and understanding of the Lake Clark Basin will help the NPS in making sound management decisions.

The attribute MUID was used to distinguish the soil type. MUID = AK220, AK221, and AK222 are Rough Mountainous Lands, MUID = AK041, AK042, and AK048 are Andisols, MUID = AK043 and AK054 are Inceptisols, MUID = AK028, AK118, AK153, and AK266 are Gelisols, MUID = AK242, AK250, AK251, and AK252 are spodosols.
