Abstract:
This dataset is a depiction of surficial geology for the 1002
study area of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. These data
were compiled and mapped by U.S. Geological Survey, Geological
Mapping Division at a source scale of 1:250000 and represents
35 geological units. This database is based on the USGS Open File
report 86-334, Engineering-Geologic Maps of Northern Alaska, Coastal
Plain and Foothills of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for
the 1002 Study Area.
Purpose:
This dataset provides engineering geology, engineering contrainsts, site planning, sand and gravel deposits and permafrost areas for the ANWR environmental resource investigations.

The geologic report that this dataset is based on is preliminary and has not been edited or reviewed for conformity with U.S. Geological Survey editorial standards and stratigraphic nomenclature.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
All polygon features are checked for topology using Arc/INFO software. Each polygon begins and ends with a node feature. All nodes are checked for errors so that there are no dangling features. There are no duplicate lines or polygons. All nodes will snap together and close polygons based on a specified tolerance. If the node is not within the tolerance it is adjusted manually. The tests for logical consistency are performed in Arc/INFO.

Process_Description:
USGS Geologic units describing surficial geology at a 1:250000 source scale and a 10 meter resolution for the Flaxman Island, Barter Island, Mt. Michelson, and Demarcation Point Quadrangles were hand digitized using ARC/INFO software. These maps were edgematched and built with polygon topology. Attribute files and lookup table were constructed. The DESC.UNIT.LUT were joined with the polygon attribute table through the join item SURFGEO code. The final map was projected into Albers Equal Area projection.
